UP05 Voicebox

All singers possess a voicebox – the larynx – but a single box cannot contain the limitless sounds and expressions of the human voice. In compiling this issue, the first in volume ii of Unknown Public , we present a selection that shows off some particularly individual vocal talents and compositional skills – some of them hard-won over long periods of time. Although the voice is our most immediate, natural instrument, its training and development are fraught with problems. Fortunately, most of the singers included here have found a personal, unforced route to skilful expression, avoiding the postures that can make opera singers and punk prima donnas equally incomprehensible... © 1994 JLW
